Brentford boss Mark Warburton was delighted to see Sam Saunders back in action after a 10-month injury lay-off.
Popular midfielder Saunders made his first Championship appearance for the Bees as a late substitute, along with Tommy Smith, during Saturday's 3-2 win at Millwall.
"It was not a token gesture to bring Sam on," said Warburton.
"We wanted Sam and Tommy to come on and keep the ball in a frenetic period of the game.
"Millwall were knocking long balls, we had to win the first ball and deal with the second. We wanted to keep the ball, maintain our quality and keep an offensive stance.
"Sam did that well. He is a vital part of the squad."
