Aaron Hughes is thoroughly enjoying a 'fresh start' at Brighton & Hove Albion as he battles for a regular first team role.

The Northern Ireland international has added vast experience to the Amex Stadium ranks after joining as a free agent.

The 34-year-old defender ended last season with Queens Park Rangers, helping them to promotion into the Premier League.

He is now looking to repeat the trick at Brighton, a side that has secured back-to-back finishes in the Sky Bet Championship play-off places.

Hughes is relishing the challenge, telling The Argus: “Any time you join a new club it feels like a fresh start but I’ve settled in pretty quickly and it’s a fantastic set-up at Brighton, a fantastic club. So far, so good.

“It’s early days but I’m enjoying it so far.”

Brighton have recovered from a shaky start to collect seven points from their last three fixtures, but Hughes believes it is too early to be speculating on what the season might hold.

The former Fulham man added: “The league is very competitive and this year there are so many teams with a chance.

“It’s going to be a long tough season and you can never predict it.

“Momentum is everything in this division because a string of results can really make a difference.”
