First-team coach Paul Simpson claimed there is "still work that needs to be done" following Derby's 1-0 win against Burton on Tuesday night.

Jeff Hendrick's first-half goal was enough to secure the Rams a friendly win in the penultimate game of their pre-season fixtures.

Derby scored after Johnny Russell's free-kick rattled the crossbar and Hendrick followed it up, heading past Jon McLaughlin, who was starting for the first time since joining the Brewers.

Burton enjoyed large parts of the possession and were unlucky not to get anything from the game, although Derby could have had three as Hendrick and Russell were denied by the woodwork in the second period.

Simpson told the club's website: "It was a tough game, which we anticipated it would be coming to a local side and a good crowd in attendance.

"We found that there's still work that needs to be done before the opening game of the season, which is something we knew anyway.

"What we need to do is keep working hard in training and find that understanding of getting back to doing what we did very well last season.

"At the moment we're not quite there yet but we're working towards that."
