Wigan Athletic have purchased Charnock Richard Golf and Country Club with a view to developing the site as a new training ground.
The 89-acre site on the outskirts of Chorley was established as a golf course in 1994, and includes a club house, bars, restaurant and a function suite.
The golf club will continue to operate as normal during the current golf season and all competitions and fixtures will be honoured.
If the necessary local authority planning permissions are forthcoming, work could begin at the site by the end of the year; a previously outlined development near Wrightington Hotel and Country Club will now not be proceeding.
The Championship club have been at their present training location - Christopher Park - for nearly 20 years, purchasing that facility from Wigan College last year.
