Jeff Hendrick will make his first start for the Republic of Ireland who face the world and European champions Spain in a friendly international in New York on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old, who has previously collected three Irish caps from off the bench, is one of seven changes from the XI which started against the Faroe Islands in Dublin last Friday.

James McCarthy also starts while Sean St Ledger and Robbie Keane are the only survivors from the team which met Spain during the Euro 2012 finals.

On that occasion, a year ago this week, Spain romped to a 4-0 victory in Gdansk and went on to lift the trophy.

Those missing for various reasons, are John O'Shea, Jonathan Walters, Wes Hoolahan, Aiden McGeady, Glen Whelan, Marc Wilson, Keiren Westwood and Richard Dunne.

Coach Giovanni Trapattoni's Ireland team: David Forde, Paul McShane, Sean St Ledger, Darren O'Dea, Stephen Kelly, Seamus Coleman, Jeff Hendrick, James McCarthy, Andy Keogh, Robbie Keane (c), Conor Sammon
