Dougie Freedman admits Damien Delaney has played a key role for Crystal Palace as they have surged up the Championship table in recent weeks.

The Eagles made a dismal start to the league campaign, losing their first three games, but the arrival of centre-back Delaney on a free transfer appears to have added some steel to the back-line.

Palace are sitting pretty in fourth following a seven-game unbeaten run and Freedman is full for praise for Delaney, who scored in last weekend's 4-3 win over Burnley before a late slip led to a Clarets consolation goal.

"He deserved his goal and he's been fantastic since he's been here," Freedman told Advertiser Sport.

"It was unfortunate with the slip for their goal, but he's been very good for the dressing room.

"I thought all the players were fantastic. We lost three goals but the spirit we've got definitely deserved something.

"The momentum and the spirit at the club is great right now and I think it just shows you that at 2-2, there was only going to be one team in and that's the pleasing thing for me right now.

"You can never always rely on talent but if you've got that in your group, then it's very pleasing as a coach."
