Middlesbrough are closing in on a new signing after agreeing a fee with Doncaster Rovers for defender George Friend.
Doncaster have confirmed that Friend has been given permission to travel to Teesside to hold talks regarding a return to the Championship.
Rovers boss Dean Saunders is keen to improve his squad following relegation to League One and the sale of Friend will create space for new arrivals.
However, Saunders expects that Boro could face competition to finalise the capture of Friend, who joined Doncaster two years ago from Wolves.
"I didn't want to lose George but I've got to get some players out before I can get some in," said Saunders.
"We've agreed a fee but I think there will be a few other clubs coming in and trying to take him as well."
Friend has made 64 appearances during his time at the Keepmoat Stadium and reports claim Boro have lodged a six-figure bid.
