Stopper expected to battle for starting spot with Mannone

Hull City have signed goalkeeper Trevor Carson on a month-long loan deal from Sunderland. The Black Cats' reserve shot-stopper is expected to be on the bench for Nicky Barmby's side for their Championship clash against Peterborough at the KC Stadium at the weekend. The 23-year-old, who made eight appearances on loan at Bury earlier in the season, will provide cover for injured duo Adriano Basso and Peter Gulacsi and he is expected to fight new loanee Vito Mannone for a starting place after the Italian became the Tigers' new first-choice keeper when he completed a move from Arsenal last week until the end of the season. The club had been left with only rookie Rob Peet as cover in last weekend's FA Cup win over Ipswich which prompted Barmby to make a swift move for a back-up keeper. The former Northern Ireland Under-21 international joined Sunderland from Killyleagh Boys in 2004. However, he struggled to make an impression at the Stadium of Light, leading to loan spells with Chesterfield, Lincoln and Brentford before a brief spell at Gigg Lane.
