Burnley veteran Graham Alexander has left the Championship club after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.
The versatile 39-year-old joined the Clarets from local rivals Preston in August 2007 and had one year left on his contract.
Alexander had been club captain and in April became only the second outfield player in English football to make 1,000 senior appearances.
The former Scotland international was instrumental in Burnley's long-awaited return to the top flight in 2009 and played a major role during the club's inaugural Premier League campaign.
However, Burnley manager Eddie Howe took charge at Turf Moor in January and has put together a long-term strategy of reducing the average age of his playing squad.
Alexander has shown an interest in going into management, narrowly missing out on the Bury job this summer, and Howe was happy to let the former Scunthorpe and Luton man pursue other opportunities.
