England striker fails to agree new terms with Championship club

Striker Jay Bothroyd has been released by Cardiff after failing to agree new terms with the Championship outfit. Bothroyd, who won his first England cap when called up by Fabio Capello for November's friendly against France, becomes a free agent with his Bluebirds contract expiring this summer. There is sure to be a scramble to secure the services of the former Arsenal trainee, who has bagged 41 league goals in 112 games for Cardiff after joining the Welsh club in a £300,000 deal from Wolves in August 2008. Dave Jones' side, who suffered play-off heartbreak again this season after being beaten by Reading in the semi-finals, have also been unable to agree new terms with midfielder Chris Burke, who joins Bothroyd in heading for the exit door. Jones brought in a host of loan signings in a bid to secure promotion to the Premier League, including Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy, but these players are all now heading back to their parent clubs. "Contracts have not been offered to Jay Bothroyd and Chris Burke following an inability for all parties to agree suitable new terms during the 2010/11 season," a statement on the club's official website read.

Return

"Adam Matthews leaves the club having agreed terms with Celtic during the 2010/11 season. Gavin Rae and Martin John have been released and are free to secure new contracts elsewhere. "On loan players Craig Bellamy, Jason Brown, Stephen Bywater, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Jason Koumas, Seyi Olofinjana and Jlloyd Samuel are to return to their parent clubs. "Anthony Gerrard, Solomon Taiwo and Aaron Wildig are to return to Cardiff City." The Bluebirds have also been making moves to secure the future of some of their younger players, with deals offered to five, while two more have been allowed to move on. The statement added: "Emerging players Jonathan Meades and Jordan Santiago have been offered new professional contracts. From the Academy ranks Ibrahim Farah, Nathaniel Jarvis and Alex Evans have all been offered senior terms with the club. "Sameth Al-Basith and Steffan Jones have been released."
