Raynes: Keen to make amends for Norwich drubbing

Michael Raynes feels Scunthorpe must make amends for last weekend's drubbing at Norwich - despite facing Championship leaders QPR this Saturday.

Alan Knill took charge last Thursday but his arrival did not have the immediate impact the Iron board had anticipated as two days later they slumped to a 6-0 defeat at Carrow Road.

Scunny capitulated after Paul Reid was sent off in the 31st minute after giving away the penalty for Norwich's second goal.

But Raynes admits the Iron were already being run ragged and he believes the players owe it to Knill and the fans to put in a much-improved performance as they aim to revive their survival hopes.

"We were all very disappointed after Saturday's game," the versatile defender told skysports.com. "We got battered really. We weren't at the races and we got punished for it.

"Even before the red card they were passing it round really well. The football Norwich play is difficult for most teams to deal with and in my opinion they'll go up.

"But the way we folded - you can't do that. Even if you go behind you need to shut up shop. We let in six goals and that's just not good enough. The fans deserve better.

"It was the gaffer's first game too and we obviously had a bit of a nightmare so everybody wants to show what we're really about.

"It's never good for the new gaffer to come in and get beat 6-0 so we want to put that right for ourselves and for him."

Saturday's setback was Scunthorpe's fifth straight defeat and left them eight points from safety with seven games left.

But Raynes insists new boss Knill has managed to keep spirits high in his first full week at Glanford Park and he believes the Iron can upset the table-toppers.

"There's been a lot of turmoil at Scunny this year but things are really positive at the minute," added the 23-year-old.

"The new gaffer's come in and given everybody a lift in training and we're looking forward to the game on Saturday. He wants us to get it down and play, which is what I love to do too.

"We need to keep a good, steady ship, bolt the hatches down in defence and hopefully nick a goal ourselves. But we're not going to go into the game defending - we're going to take the game to them. There's no other way to do it.

"No-one expects us to win against top of the league so we've got nothing to lose. We've beaten Swansea and Forest at home recently so strange things can happen."
