Veteran midfielder keen to make move into management

Robbie Savage has revealed that he will turn his attention to coaching if he fails to earn a new contract at Derby. The midfielder will see his current deal with the Rams expire at the end of the season, and he is yet to be offered fresh terms. There is still plenty of time for an extension to be thrashed out, with the 36-year-old thoroughly enjoying his football at Pride Park. He is, however, aware that his playing career is drawing towards a close and admits he will turn his hand to management if he finds himself without a club in the summer. "I've got two New Year Resolutions, though one kind of depends on the other," Savage wrote in his Daily Mirror column. "First, it's the final six months of my contract at Derby, a club I love, and I'm going to play as hard and as well as I can to try and earn another one-year deal.

Consideration

"But second, if Nigel Clough and the backroom guys decide my time is up at Pride Park I will walk away with a handshake, some great memories and no hard feelings. "It's going to be a major decision for me in the summer but, apart from my media career, one of the options under consideration is a player-manager role. "No doubt some of you will be shaking your heads. A couple of my old gaffers might be shaking with laughter. "But while I might be a bit daft, I'm not daft enough not to have learned a few tricks from the likes of Martin O'Neill. "I think I've got the experience, the contacts, the drive and the man-management skills to do a decent job, like the one my great pal Paul Dickov is doing at Oldham."
