Birmingham defender looks to pull clear of trouble

Stephen Carr believes the next few weeks will determine whether Birmingham face a relegation battle. Alex McLeish's Blues have struggled to replicate last season's fine form and head into Christmas in 16th place, just two points above the drop zone. Carr is determined to enjoy a good run over the festive period and into the New Year to set Birmingham on course for a more comfortable second half to the campaign. He feels that if they are still in trouble after the next few games it will be difficult to avoid an agonising scrap for survival. "We'd never be complacent about where we are," the captain told the Birmingham Mail. "We are making it hard for ourselves at the moment. It's a different position for us from last year, a different challenge, but I'm sure we're up to it, no problem. "We've got it within us, definitely. It's an important period we're coming up to now, Christmas and New Year. "The next few weeks will determine, really, how our season goes. Whether we are in a proper relegation battle, or comfortable."

Strengthen

Alex McLeish would like to bolster his squad when the transfer window opens and Carr admits they could do with a few more options. He continued: "There's a lot of games and our squad's a little stretched at the minute. "If the manager is saying that we need to strengthen, then that's what we need to do. We need a few more players. "Hopefully that will happen in the January window. "We haven't got many more bodies than we had last year. I know we got bodies in during the summer, but we also let a lot of players go. "We have been fortunate with injuries and we've kept a settled team. We managed to do that last year. "But if we get injuries to certain positions then we will be really stretched, more than we are at the moment. "So hopefully the manager will be able to strengthen and get a few players in, and they'd bring us a buzz as well as help the squad."
