Defender plays for reserves after two months out with knee injury

Wayne Thomas is edging closer to a first-team comeback for Doncaster Rovers following an outing for the reserves. The experienced defender has been restricted to just two appearances for Rovers since joining the club in August following his departure from Southampton. He is hoping he has now overcome his knee troubles and, after playing in a behind-closed-doors game against Hull, could be in contention for Saturday's Championship clash with Millwall. The 31-year-old said: "I actually fractured my tibia. I chipped a little bit of bone off the back of the knee.

Ahead of schedule

"I'm two or three weeks ahead of schedule and now it's a case of bringing me up to fitness, more specifically match fitness and just getting that sharpness back. "My knee feels good. Obviously, you need to get the mileage back into your legs so to speak. "You can run on treadmills, you can swim, you can go on cross trainers and bikes, but there's no substitute for game time and game situations. "Hopefully I can recover very quickly, which is important, and be available when called upon."
