Preston boss Darren Ferguson will not be following up his interest in Macclesfield striker John Rooney.

Striker's brace in practice game fails to earn offer

Preston North End manager Darren Ferguson has confirmed he will not be following up his interest in Macclesfield Town striker John Rooney. The teenager featured for the Lilywhites towards the end of last season in a practice game and scored twice against Wrexham. However, while Rooney impressed Ferguson during the behind-closed-doors encounter, the Preston chief is not planning an offer. Ferguson told the Lancashire Evening Post: "John came here and did really well in a match. "But at the moment we won't be taking that one further." Rooney is out of contract at Macclesfield at the end of the month and trained with Preston's Championship rivals Derby County last season.
