Scunthorpe United's influential midfield duo Sam Togwell and Matt Sparrow are both close to accepting new contracts.
Iron manager Nigel Adkins has already lost Grant McCann to Peterborough United since the end of last season and is determined to hang on to Togwell and Sparrow.
The pair have been offered improved terms at Glanford Park and the Championship club feel a deal will be reached with the players.
United general manager David Beeby told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "I believe that we are pretty close to an agreement with Sam and hopefully we are in a similar situation with Matt.
"We have given both players a deadline by which we would need a decision from them. Obviously they are entitled to see what they can get elsewhere, but we have to look after the interests of this club.
"They both know that we want them to stay, but we need to know if we are going to have to look to replace them.
"Their agents have come back to us about one or two things and we have improved the original offer that was on the table."
