Striker eager to earn international recognition
Billy Mehmet is hopeful he could emulate Colin Kazim-Richards and break into the full Turkey squad following his move to Genclerbirligi.
The 26-year-old penned a three-year deal to move to the Turkish capital.
He opted for a move to Turkey after deciding to leave St Mirren following five-years in Paisley.
Now Mehmet has told
skysports.com that he is looking to make a major impact in Ankara and with his Turkish heritage, has one eye on making the national squad.
"I am delighted to be moving, and I admit that making the international squad would be a dream come true for me," said Mehmet, who has previously played for Ireland's Under-21s.
"Previously Kazim-Richards came to Turkey, did well and got selected - and I too hope that could happen with some good performances for Genclerbirligi."
Amazing
Mehmet also moved to clear up suggestions that he was looking to build up towards a move to one of Turkey's big clubs in Fenerbahce or Galatasaray.
"To be honest my words were a little misquoted on the local media, I simply said I cannot wait to play against teams like Fener and Gala, and that will be amazing," he said.
"My thoughts are totally with Genclerbirligi and all I want is to do well and do my best for them."
