Preston North End boss Darren Ferguson has made an approach to sign Craig Morgan from former club Peterborough United.
Ferguson is looking to overhaul his squad at Deepdale during the summer and is keen to be reunited with Wales international Morgan.
The defender, who came close to joining Notts County after Ferguson's departure from London Road last autumn, has 12 months remaining on his Peterborough contract.
He has been the subject of an enquiry from Preston, although the club's current financial troubles could hinder any move.
Preston have been hit by a winding-up petition from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs and Peterborough's director of football Barry Fry admits the Lilywhites may not be able to fund a bid for the centre-back.
"Preston have apparently been interested in Craig for the last six months," Fry told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.
"We have had an enquiry from the Preston chairman, but they have yet to make a bid and with the problems they have off the field they are unlikely to offer enough anyway."
