Gavin Mahon is aiming to earn a new deal at QPR after manager Neil Warnock gave him a chance to prove his worth in pre-season.
Mahon has yet to play a competitive game in 2010 after undergoing knee surgery last November and Warnock is keen to see the 33-year-old, who is out of contract this summer, in action.
The former Watford midfielder is determined to make the most of his chance.
He told the Uxbridge Gazette: "I had a meeting with Neil and he told me that he had tried to sign me before and that he liked me as a player.
"But he needs to see me fit and I understand that completely.
"He said that I should come back in pre-season and show him the kind of player that he thinks I can be. If I do that then there will be something here for me.
"If if I moved somewhere else then I would have to get myself fit regardless, but I want to stay here as I believe that the club could take off next season."
