Brighton agree defender move

Brighton & Hove Albion have clinched the signing of Marcos Painter from Swansea. The 23-year-old defender has enjoyed a loan spell with the Seagulls and has now agreed a pre-contract. Painter will join Brighton on a free transfer once his deal at Swansea has expired. "Marcos helped to bring stability to the defence when he arrived on loan from Swansea City," said boss Gus Poyet. "I knew he was a very good player, but we had to check him out after his knee injury. "He has proven his fitness, and become a popular addition with the supporters, who I am sure will be delighted that he has signed a permanent deal with the club."

Kuipers role

Meanwhile, the club have offered freed goalkeeper Michael Kuipers a non-playing role within the club. "This is one of the hardest decisions I have had to make since becoming a manager," said Poyet. "Michel has been a top goalkeeper for Brighton, and rightly he is a legend at the club, but this day comes to every footballer, and I think now it is the right time. "I knew, before I arrived, that he is held in high esteem by those at the club and the supporters, I have seen that first hand and he deserves the offer of a role elsewhere in the club. "That may be something Michel combines with playing part-time, or he may not be ready to quit league football just yet - but the offer is there for him to consider." Finally the club have confirmed that young goalkeeper Josh Pelling has been handed a free transfer.
