Deeney to make first start for club at Bristol City

Derby County goalkeepers Saul Deeney and Ross Atkins have both agreed new one-year contracts at Pride Park. Deeney joined the Rams last summer after playing under manager Nigel Clough at Burton Albion, but he has had to wait for his chance in the team. His sole appearance for Derby to date was when appearing as an early substitute against Reading last month and was then sent off before half-time. With Stephen Bywater ruled out of the final two games of the season, Rams boss Clough feels it is an ideal time for Deeney to make his first start for the club.

In good form

"It was in the back of our minds to give Saul some games," Clough told the Derby Evening Telegraph. "It came up when Stephen Bywater had his bad back. We said the first chance we get, we will give Stephen a breather. "We are now safe in the division and Stephen has picked up a rib injury, so Saul comes in. "Saul will get a couple of games and anybody who has seen the reserves this season will know he has been in good form." Young shot-stopper Atkins, who will be on the bench for Saturday's game at Bristol City, has also accepted a new 12-month deal with Derby.
