Mawene and Chilvers in line for contract extensions

Preston North End are ready to hand new contracts to defensive duo Youl Mawene and Liam Chilvers. Both men have been at Deepdale for a considerable amount of time and Lilywhites boss Darren Ferguson knows their experience could be vital. Mawene signed from Derby in 2004, while Chilvers was snapped up from Colchester in 2006. The pair have been regular performers for Preston this season, while they also provide able back-up when dropping out of the starting XI. Ferguson knows it is important to have quality cover in all areas of the field and is determined to build a squad around solid foundations.

Competition

He has recently added Elliot Ward to his defensive ranks in a loan deal from Coventry, while letting Neill Collins join Leeds, but insists Mawene and Chilvers remain part of his long-term plans. "I want good competition for places," said Ferguson. "I am looking at Elliott in terms of next season, and that's no slight on the other centre-halves at the club. "We're going to sort out another contract with Youl Mawene and we're got an option with Liam too."
