Bluebirds ace prepared to work hard for a starting berth

Riccardo Scimeca insists he has no desire to secure a loan switch away from Cardiff City. The experienced midfielder has seen his time with the Bluebirds blighted by injury, restricting him to just a handful of appearances in the last two seasons. He is now fully recovered from an ankle problem which ruled him out for much of the 2008/09 campaign, but he is still lacking in match fitness. A loan move to League One outfit Brentford was touted during the summer transfer window, with the intention of providing Scimeca with an opportunity to play regular first-team football. The 34-year-old insists such a deal was never a realistic option, though, and maintains that his ambition is to break into Dave Jones' plans at Cardiff. "There were whispers about a move out on loan, but I had never been thinking about doing it to be honest," he said in the Western Mail. "I'm back in training which I'm delighted about. I'm feeling great and getting stronger all the time. "It was fantastic to get on in the Bristol Rovers game (in the Carling Cup) and I felt good. The reception I got from the fans that night was very special to me. It was nice to know they hadn't forgotten about me. "The lads have had a fantastic start to the new season and I would love to be involved. I know I need to work hard and if the chance does arrive to get a place then I will do my best to take it."
