Bristol City manager Gary Johnson is considering whether to offer Finland international Aleksei Eremenko a permanent deal at Ashton Gate.
The midfielder featured in the Robins' recent pre-season friendly victory over Hereford at Edgar Street after being spotted playing for Russian club FC Saturn.
Johnson's chief scout and brother, Pete, recommended Eremenko and, after seeing the 26-year-old firsthand, the City boss is deciding whether to make an offer.
He told the Bristol Evening Post: "It's wrong to describe Alexei as a trialist. He's an established international with a good pedigree.
"He's someone who was spotted by my brother, Pete, and we've had him watched a number of times, playing both for Finland and his club side in Russia.
"We've liked what we've seen and that's why we've decided to invite him over here so we can have a closer look."
Eremenko is waiting to discover his future as he gets a taste for life with the Championship club.
"I am spending a few days in England. I will get to know the club, take part in training and after that a decision will be made," he told Sport Express.
