Motherwell boss Mark McGhee has revealed he was priced out of a move for Swansea City-bound Stephen Dobbie.
Swansea have agreed a deal to sign Dobbie on a long-term contract when his current agreement with Queen of the South expires in the summer.
Dobbie was also wanted by Motherwell, but McGhee revealed the SPL club were unable to match the wages offered by Championship side Swansea.
"We tried to sign Stephen Dobbie, but he went to Swansea for money we couldn't afford," said McGhee.
McGhee is continuing to make efforts to bring in new faces and is also trying to persuade his own out-of-contract players to stay at Fir Park.
He added: "I tried to sign two players yesterday, I'm speaking to another player today and we've got another coming on trial next week.
"The players who are out of contract here have not given me a definitive answer.
"They all say they want to keep their options open, which they are entitled to do."
