Laws looking to tie down stars

Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws has acted sooner rather than later as he attempts to tie up the futures of five players. Player of the Year Marcus Tudgay and Players' Player of the Year Lee Grant have both been offered new deals, despite having a year left on their contracts, with both having been attracting attention from Premier League clubs. Tommy Spurr, Richard Wood and Richard Hinds have also been offered improved contracts to stay at Hillsborough. Spurr and Wood also have a year left on their contracts, but Hinds' deal was set to expire this summer. "We are doing our planning immediately rather than waiting until the summer, and our plan is to keep these kinds of players," Laws told the Sheffield Star. "We have made them increased offers which in the current climate are substantial." Owls boss Laws also said that these new deals would not prevent him signing new players in the summer transfer window. "We are increasing the budget and, besides making these offers, it allows me to bring in three or four good quality players." Newly-crowned Young Player of the Year, Luke Boden, has also been offered an extended stay after picking up his award - which was handpicked by Laws himself. The club had already taken up an option to extend Leon Clarke's contract by one year to 2010. Midfielder's Steve Watson and Wade Small have contracts that end this summer. However, Wednesday are reluctant to offer Watson a new deal while he is injured, as his hip problem may force him to retire. Small's situation will be resolved in a couple of weeks' time when the winger returns from his loan spell at Blackpool.
