Championship leaders add goalkeeping cover

Championship leaders Wolves have snapped up experienced goalkeeper Darren Ward from Sunderland. The 34-year-old has joined on loan for the rest of the season as Wolves boss Mick McCarthy wanted experienced back-up for Wayne Hennessey and Shane Higgs, with Carl Ikeme now ruled out for the rest of the season. Ward has made nearly 600 first-team appearances and McCarthy hopes he will provide valuable back-up to his other keepers. "Darren is here until the end of the season," said McCarthy. "With Carl still injured we need a third keeper and Darren is a good and experienced keeper who played a big part in Sunderland's promotion campaign. "Darren will come in and keep the pressure on the other two and be there if we need him - he'll be a good character around the place as well. "He gives us good cover and may also help Wayne (Hennessey) as well because it's always good to have competition for places and people pushing each other."

Ikeme out

McCarthy confirmed that Ikeme would not be fit for a number of weeks. "Carl's going to be a few more weeks and will not be involved," he said. "Even when he does get back training he'll have been out for a long time and we need cover for that position. "We only need to have somebody go down with sickness or something and we'll be down to one keeper. "You only have to get one injured and you're scratching around so we've been pro-active and done it before we have any problems."
