Alex McLeish has indicated that Mehdi Nafti could leave Birmingham in the January transfer window.

Blues boss reveals midfielder's future in doubt

Boss Alex McLeish has indicated that Mehdi Nafti could leave Birmingham in the January transfer window. The midfielder was left out of Tuesday's FA Cup defeat to Wolves, despite a lack of available players for the bench. Nafti's last appearance came in the Championship away to Wolves, but McLeish decided not to include the Tunisian international as he fielded just six substitutes in the FA Cup tie instead of the permitted seven. With only 12 appearances to his name this season, and facing competition from nine other central midfielders in the last year of his contract - it appears Nafti is ready to cut his losses this month and play his football elsewhere.

Possible exit

"There is a possibly, a chance, that Mehdi will be leaving the club," McLeish confirmed on the club's official website. "I've spoken to Mehdi and his advisors and there may be something happening. "He is still contracted until the end of the season but we decided for the moment to leave him out of things and we'll just see what happens in the coming weeks before the window closes."
