Skysports.com understands that Alex Bruce has been offered a new contract by Ipswich Town.

The defender has been handed a new two-year deal by the Portman Road club.

Bruce's current deal expires at the end of the season but Ipswich have moved quickly to secure his services although it is not yet clear whether the 24-year-old has signed the extension.

The defender has played in 11 of Town's 27 league games this season but has been sent off twice.

He made his Republic of Ireland debut in the November friendly with Poland.

Bruce joined Ipswich in August 2006 on a free transfer and has become a fans' favourite at Portman Road.
