Karl Hawley has returned to Preston after concluding his loan spell with Northampton Town.
The 26-year-old former Carlisle winger spent the last two months with the Cobblers, making 11 appearances for the League One outfit.
Northampton had been keen on extending Hawley's loan for a further month, but had to shelve those plans after using spare funds to bolster their backline.
"Last month Northampton were interested in extending Hawley's loan, however after the weekend they had defensive problems which has meant they have had to look to bring in two defenders on loan," Preston boss Alan Irvine told the club's official website.
"This has meant it wasn't financially possible for them to extend Karl's loan.
"We're obviously delighted to have him back having had two months of regular football at League One level and he'll join back up with us in training this week."
