Crewe Alexandra are hoping to sign Swansea City's veteran defender Dennis Lawrence on loan.
Lawrence has made just one appearance for Swansea in the Carling Cup this season following the club's promotion to the Championship.
He has been approached by Crewe and is expected to hold talks with the League One club early next week.
After conceding four goals at home to Southend United last weekend, Crewe's assistant manager Neil Baker outlined the need for reinforcements.
"We've spoken to his club and the player is due to speak to us and we'll see whether we can do it," Baker told The Sentinel.
"It's a position which needs looking at. The defending was good against Colchester and again at Liverpool on Tuesday night, but there's a crack in them as the Southend game proved."
