Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws is bracing himself for the worst as he awaits news of Akpo Sodje's knee injury.
The forward helped Wednesday to a 4-1 victory over Burnley in their first Championship game of the season on Saturday.
Sodje netted twice inside 17 minutes to guide the Owls on their way, but he was stretchered off shortly after having injured his knee.
The 28-year-old underwent a scan on Sunday which revealed tendon damage and a specialist will now diagnose how long Sodje faces on the sidelines.
"The scan confirmed that Akpo has damaged a tendon behind his knee," Laws told Wednesday's official website.
"We're now going to the specialist, who has all the knowledge and know-how and he will tell us which direction we go in.
"One of the most important things is to discover how long he's going to be out for. We saw on Saturday what kind of difference Sodje makes to the team.
"Any length of time will be detrimental to the team so we need to find out as quickly as possible so we can adjust.
"I'm not looking forward to finding out the news because I don't believe it will be good news no matter which surgeon he goes to see."
