Ipswich Town are holding talks with Ben Thatcher regarding a deal for the experienced defender.

Thatcher is available on a free transfer after failing to agree a new contract with Charlton Athletic at the end of last season.

He featured for Ipswich during their pre-season trip to Northern Ireland last week and has expressed a wish to secure a contract at Portman Road.

Town boss Jim Magilton has now confirmed that he is discussing the possibility of handing the 32-year-old a deal.

"I have spoken to Ben and the talks went well," Magilton told the club's official website.

"It's early days though and he is weighing up his options before we look at taking it any further."
