Jim Magilton says he has yet to make a firm offer for Nicky Maynard, but is keen to sign the Crewe Alexandra striker.
Ipswich Town are among a clutch of clubs to have been linked with a bid for Maynard, who impressed in the second half of last season.
Premier League trio Fulham, Hull City and Middlesbrough are all understood to be admirers of the 21-year-old, along with Ipswich's Championship rivals Bristol City.
Crewe reportedly value Maynard in the £2.5million bracket and first-team coach Steve Holland recently admitted he is 'dreading' a phone call about the youngster.
Town boss Magilton has discussed a deal for the forward, but is yet to follow up his interest with a concrete offer.
"Nicky Maynard is a very good player and we have had a conversation with his agent, but he is under contract at Crewe," Magilton told the East Anglian Daily Times.
"If there was an opportunity to take Nicky to our football club I would take it.
"At the minute he is one of our targets and we have not made a firm offer as yet."
