Alan Irvine fears a permanent deal for West Bromwich Albion striker Craig Beattie is beyond Preston North End's reach.
Beattie joined Preston on loan in March only to suffer an injury on his debut which kept him sidelined for two months.
He did feature in Preston's final game of last season and has been linked with a return to Deepdale next term.
However, Irvine believes the Scot, who cost West Brom £1.25million from Celtic last summer, is out of Preston's price range.
"I think it may well be out of our reach," said Irvine in the Birmingham Mail.
"I think they (Albion) have intimated they would be prepared to sell him.
"I think the fee they are looking for is pretty high. So high, in fact, it may well be out of our reach."
