Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Alberto Serran is set to become the latest Spaniard to join Swansea.

Spanish defender on the verge of completing move

Roberto Martinez has confirmed to Sky Sports News that Alberto Serran is set to become the latest Spaniard to arrive at Swansea. The Swans have been tracking the defender for some time and are delighted to have secured the services of a player who has experience of playing in the Primera Liga during his time with Espanyol. The 23-year-old has passed a medical at the Liberty Stadium and is expected to complete the formalities of the switch in the near future. Swansea coach Martinez is pleased to have got his compatriot on board and feels that Serran will help to bolster the depth of his squad ahead of their return to the second tier of English football.

Highly-rated

"We can say that he passed his medical this morning and will sign a contract very soon," the Swans boss told Sky Sports News. "We are delighted as we have been following Alberto Serran for a number of months now and we are delighted that he is coming to us because he brings something different to what we have got. "He is highly rated in Spain, but he has a fantastic future and he ticks all the boxes to be a Swansea City player. "We are delighted because he has given us an extra strength in an area we were looking to strengthen.
Competition
"With the amount of games you have in the British league you need to be strong in every area and I think we were a little bit thin in that area. "Alberto is someone who is an aggressive defender, he is confident in one-on-one situations, he has a fantastic leap and is very comfortable on the ball. "He gives us good competition in an area that we were a little bit light on numbers. I feel he has the best years of his career in front of him."
Brandy
Meanwhile, Martinez has also reiterated his desire to bring Febian Brandy back to South Wales next season. The 19-year-old striker joined Swansea on loan from Manchester United in January last season, scoring three goals as he helped the club secure the League One title. The Swans are keen to secure a similar deal for the teenager ahead of the forthcoming campaign and Martinez has revealed that he is set to hold discussions with Sir Alex Ferguson as regards to the player's availability. "Sir Alex is due back from his holiday and we hope we'll be able to find out what he thinks about Febian very soon," Martinez told the Swansea Evening Post. "We have to see what Manchester United think of Febian's situation. "It's important to find out what Sir Alex thinks of the way Febian developed during his stay with us. Hopefully, after that, we will be able to sort out another loan."
