Barnsley owner Patrick Cryne would not allow skipper Brian Howard to leave the club for less than £10million.
Howard has reportedly attracted the interest of a number of Premier League clubs after an impressive season with The Tykes.
Cryne, however, is reluctant to part company with one of the club's stars and hopes to retain his services for next term.
He told the Star: "Brian Howard must be one of the best players in the Championship. You don't realise how good he is until you take the things he's done and put them on a disk and pull them together.
"People talk about Sheffield United's Michael Tonge being a £3million or £4million player. What's Brian worth? By comparison, he would be worth £10million.
"Brian has been a truly outstanding player in the Championship for the last couple of years."
