Crewe Alexandra have played down reports linking Nicky Maynard with a £1million move to West Bromwich Albion.
The promising striker has impressed in recent weeks and has scored five goals in his last four games for the League One strugglers.
There has been speculation West Brom are weighing up a summer bid, but Crewe assistant boss Neil Baker feels the 21-year-old should stay at Gresty Road.
"When anybody is scoring goals there is bound to be speculation, but I don't know of interest from West Brom," Baker told The Sentinel.
"We know at Crewe that players who show enough potential could move on eventually and Nicky is no different.
"But he is someone we obviously want to hold on to and, with his potential, I'd be surprised if he was allowed to leave for the amount being talked about."
Meanwhile, Crewe have handed a trial to Aston Villa youngster Steven Clancy with a view to possibly signing the defender in the summer.
Baker added: "We first noticed Steve in our Youth Cup game against Villa and we think he's a player with some potential.
"He'll be available in the summer, so we'll have a good look at him while he's here."
