Goalkeeper Stephen Bywater is poised to join Ipswich on loan from Derby until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent move.
A deal has been agreed between the two clubs with Bywater now in talks with the Portman Road outfit.
Town boss Jim Magilton has been looking to bring in a new goalkeeper following the departure of Neil Alexander to Rangers.
Alexander's arrival at Ibrox should allow Roy Carroll to complete his proposed move to Pride Park, leaving Bywater free to join Ipswich.
Magilton told the club's official website: "Stephen is a young, ambitious goalkeeper who knows what is needed to win promotion from this division.
"We are delighted to have him with us and he will stay here on loan with a view to making it a permanent move in the summer."
Bywater was signed by West Ham from Rochdale before he had made a league appearance for the Spotland outfit and then moved on to Derby.
He tasted play-off final success with both the Hammers and the Rams.
