Richard Keogh has returned to Bristol City after failing to reach an agreement with Carlisle.
The defender has been on loan at Brunton Park since November and made seven appearances for the League One outfit.
Carlisle manager John Ward opted to open talks with Keogh, after his impressive run of form, with a view to securing an extended deal.
But talks over an extension to the loan, or even a permanent move, have ground to a halt and Keogh has returned to City.
Ward told the club's official website: "Richard has gone back to Bristol City as we couldn't come to an agreement that would keep him here at this moment in time.
"He's had a good time with us and we've enjoyed having him here but these things sometimes happen this way."
