Steve Tilson is hoping to agree personal terms with Leon Clarke to keep the striker at Southend United.
Clarke is currently on loan at Roots Hall from Sheffield Wednesday and has scored seven goals in 11 appearances.
Southend boss Tilson confirmed a fee has already been agreed with the Owls and he now aims to convince Clarke to drop down to League One permanently.
"We have started talks with Leon and he's obviously done really well for us, so we want him to stay," Tilson told the Southend Echo.
"There was a fee agreed over a permanent move when we sorted out the loan switch and I would like to think that wasn't a problem, so it will come down to whether or not we can agree terms with Leon.
"We hope we can because he has made a big difference since coming here."
