Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins reserved special praise for Paul Hayes after the striker's superb goal settled their game away at Colchester.
Hayes showed excellent control to score the only goal of the game but Colchester manager Geraint Williams felt his side were hard done by after having a strong penalty claim declined earlier in the game.
"Here we are again talking about referees, but perhaps because I don't give them stick they can get away with things, but I'm very disappointed with that," said Williams after the match.
"But it didn't happen and you've got to give Scunthorpe credit."
Williams' counterpart at Scunthorpe confirmed that The U's were hard done by - when asked if Kelly Youga's tangle with Mark Yeates should have been penalised, Adkins said: "Yes it was a penalty."
Team performance
However Adkins was keen to stress how well his side had done in getting the win away from home.
"It was a good team performance all round and an excellent win. We had to make changes and it was plan B, but we played some good football and I'm pleased with the effort put in by everybody.
"Not many teams will come to Colchester and get a result this season."
Disappointment
Williams on the other hand, was disappointed by the defeat, stating his side's failure to finish in front of goal as the reason for the loss.
"That's as disappointing as we've been this year, we're among the top goalscorers in the league and yet if we were still out there now I don't think we'd have scored.
"Teams are not coming here now expecting to turn us over, they are coming with a gameplan to stop us and we've got to overcome that."
