Southend are looking to extend Eric Odhiambo's loan spell beyond the initial one-month deal.
Odhiambo joined The Shrimpers from Leicester at the end of August and is due to head back to The Walkers Stadium after Tuesday's game against Bristol Rovers.
Southend would like to hang onto the young striker, despite his lack of playing time since arriving at Roots Hall.
However, assistant manager Paul Brush is unsure whether new Leicester boss Gary Megson will be willing to let Odhiambo stay at Southend.
"We would like Eric to stay and he is very keen to do so," Brush told the club's official website.
"But it may be difficult to sort out. Eric hasn't had many games here and Leicester have a new manager who has heard about Eric and is keen to see him.
"We shall have to see what happens, and I think it will be decided right at the end of his loan spell."
