Sheffield Wednesday have signed Derby's Michael Johnson on loan for a month.

Wednesday bring in defender to kick-start campaign

Sheffield Wednesday are hoping that the signing of Derby defender Michael Johnson on a month's loan will be the catalyst to kick-start their season. The 34-year-old has not played for Derby this term and will join the Owls, who are still pointless in the Championship, under the Football League's emergency loan ruling. And Wednesday boss Brian Laws, who is under considerable pressure at Hillsborough, believes the experience brought by Johnson will be a big boost to the squad. "I have been looking to bring in an experienced player to bolster our defence and Michael is the ideal candidate. "He has a vast amount of experience at Championship level and will also bring a real vocal presence to the team." Johnson could feature for the Owls against Hull on Saturday as Wednesday look to record their first points of the campaign.

Backing of the board

Laws also revealed that he has the full support of the board, despite the disastrous start to the season. "They have given me every indication they're right behind me," he said in the Sheffield Star. "The chairman has given me his full backing, which is all I can ask for. He's obviously upset, as many people will be, but he's prepared to help to turn things around. "We're now in a position where we all have to pull together. Supporters are frustrated. The board are frustrated. I'm frustrated."
