Watford are trying to find Nathan Ellington another club ahead of the striker's return to Vicarage Road in January.
Ellington has spent the past year on loan in Greece with Skoda Xanthi, but that arrangement expires when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
He still has six months remaining on his contract with the Hornets, but he does not have a future at the Championship club.
Therefore, Watford chief executive Julian Winter has confirmed the club are exploring options to move the 29-year-old on next month.
Winter said in the Watford Observer: "Nathan is on loan at Skoda Xanthi until January 1, at which point he becomes a Watford player again.
"We are working hard to try and find Nathan another club or to negotiate a new deal with his current club.
"Discussions are ongoing but technically he becomes a Watford player again on January 1. He has six months on his contract after that."
