Doncaster Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll has revealed the club moved for James Chambers prior to his Cardiff switch.
The 25-year-old was snapped up by The Bluebirds last week, but O'Driscoll thought Chambers was destined for South Yorkshire prior to Cardiff's intervention.
"You can't blame him for wanting to go to Cardiff, but we did speak to him and he would have come here if they hadn't shown an interest," he said.
"He's a versatile player who can perform at the back or in midfield and that's the type of player we are looking at."
While, O'Driscoll is keen to strengthen, he has conceded any new signing would find it hard to land a spot in his first team.
"If you bring in loan players obviously they want to be in the team, but it would be hard to leave anyone out to make way for them at present," he concluded.
