Oldham Athletic have been dealt a blow by the news that striker Scott Vernon has suffered a facial injury.

The 21-year-old was found to have sustained a fracture of the orbital wall, as well as a broken nose, in Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to bottom club Stockport County.

Vernon (pictured) has been asked to return to hospital for a detailed scan on his injury, but The Latics expect the hit-man to be out for up to six weeks.

The news is a further setback for the struggling League One side, with Oldham having lost their last seven matches in all competitions - including Tuesday's 5-1 thrashing at Bristol City.

Meanwhile, Latics boss Brian Talbot will run the rule over five trialists - including his son Daniel.

The young Talbot is a midfielder who was recently released by Rushden & Diamonds following his recovery from a knee injury.

The other trialists include Watford striker Scott Fitzgerald, who recently spent time on loan with League Two sides Swansea City and Leyton Orient.

Farsley Celtic centre back Amjad Iqbal will also look to impress Talbot, having started his playing career as a Bradford City trainee.
