Southampton full back Chris Baird is hoping his loan stint at Watford will earn him a new contract at St Mary's.

Baird's present deal with Saints expires in the summer and the Northern Ireland international is optimistic of clinching an extension.

The 22-year-old was thrust into the spotlight last season when he started the FA Cup final against Arsenal in only his fourth appearance for the club.

But he has appeared just three times for Saints this term, ironically twice against The Gunners, and has already had a loan spell at Walsall.

He is now enjoying a month back in the First Division at Watford, while Wigan Athletic have also been admirers of his services.

The right back is relishing regular first team football but has not given up hope of securing a new deal with Southampton.

"I wasn't getting a game at Southampton so I've come to Watford on loan to try to impress people," said Baird.

"I'm out of contract at the end of the season so every game counts for me.

"It hasn't worked out for me this campaign. But I still believe I can make it in The Premiership and a few people at Southampton know I can as well.

"I've done it in a cup final and I've done it against Arsenal. Once you get a taste you want to be playing there every week."
