Transfer Deadline Day: The ones that got away

Carlton Cole celebrates goal for West Ham against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park

Juan Cuadrado and Ryan Bertrand both completed big-money deals on Deadline Day – but what about the moves which never materialised?

Here, we look at some of the players who were close to switching clubs but failed to sign on the dotted line…

Emmanuel Adebayor - Tottenham to West Ham on loan

Emmanuel Adebayour

Emmanuel Adebayor has struggled for game time for Tottenham recently with the fine form of Harry Kane keeping him on the sidelines. A move to West Ham appeared to appeal to the Togo striker, while QPR were also said to be interested. However, Tottenham opted against loaning the frontman to a fellow Premier League side, which had a knock-on effect at the Hawthorns…

Carlton Cole – West Ham to West Brom

Carlton Cole celebrates goal for West Ham against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park

Carlton Cole has managed just 14 appearances in all competitions for West Ham this season, scoring three goals, and on Deadline Day Tony Pulis offered the 31-year-old the chance of regular first-team football at West Brom. Cole made the trip north to try to finalise a deal. However, in the final hour of the window, Cole was summoned back to West Ham following the collapse of Adebayor’s switch from Spurs. In turn, Brown Ideye’s transfer to Qatari side Al Gharafa fell through too.

Etienne Capoue – Tottenham to West Brom on loan

Etienne Capoue

Tottenham did strike a deal to loan Etienne Capoue to West Brom but the French midfielder rejected the chance to swap White Hart Lane for the Hawthorns. The former Toulouse man, who joined Spurs in the summer of 2013, has made just 19 starts in the Premier League since moving from France but seems determined to fight for his place in north London.

Rickie Lambert - Liverpool to Aston Villa

Rickie Lambert was another player to reject a transfer once a deal was in place – the England international opted to stick with his boyhood club Liverpool rather than complete a £5m move to Aston Villa. The 32-year-old striker, who joined the Reds from Southampton in the summer, is apparently eager to prove his worth on Merseyside.

Matt Jarvis - West Ham to QPR on loan

Premier League rules prevented Matt Jarvis from completing a loan switch to QPR. The West Ham winger seemed set to link up with Harry Redknapp’s side on Deadline Day, but QPR’s plan to swap on-loan Hammers striker Mauro Zarate - who they only borrowed on January 6 - for Jarvis contravened rules which state a club cannot send back a player and loan another from the same club in the same window.

Bafetimbi Gomis - Swansea to West Ham

A fourth deal involving West Ham came to nothing when Swansea rejected a £7m bid for Bafetimbi Gomis and the striker decided he was better off staying in south Wales than agitating for a move to London. The France international has had limited opportunities to show his ability at Swansea since signing from Lyon in June 2014 but, with Wilfried Bony sold to Manchester City, Garry Monk has convinced him he now has the chance to make his mark.
