Sky Sports sources understand that free-agent striker John Carew is having a medical at West Ham.

It was revealed earlier in the week that the Hammers had turned their attention to the former Aston Villa and Stoke player as a possible replacement for Carlton Cole, who could be sold.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce confirmed on Friday that talks were taking place with Carew ahead of the club's Championship season-opener against Cardiff on Sunday.

Those discussions appear to have reached a positive conclusion and the 31-year-old is now undergoing a medical assessment before the deal is finalised.

Carew, a £5million signing from Lyon, left Villa after four years at the end of last season following the expiry of his contract with the Midlands club.

The Norwegian joined Stoke on loan in January and scored one goal in seven Premier League starts.
